Kevin De Bruyne asserted that during his time at Chelsea, he only had a couple of conversations with Jose Mourinho. Despite proving himself as one of the top midfielders during his extensive tenure at Manchester City, his departure from Chelsea for £18 million in January 2014 made the Chelsea leadership appear mistaken. At Stamford Bridge, like many young players, De Bruyne found limited opportunities despite his evident skills, a period he recently reflected on in The Players’ Tribune.

De Bruyne arrived at Chelsea from Genk in Belgium for £7 million and was swiftly loaned to Werder Bremen, granting him just six months under Mourinho before being transferred to Wolfsburg. Following a successful year in Germany, he seemed poised to feature in Mourinho’s plans, even turning down interest from Borussia Dortmund that summer.

Initially, he started a couple of the initial four games but soon found himself sidelined by Mourinho without any explanation. “I was on the bench, and I never really got a chance again,” De Bruyne disclosed. He struggled to stay match-fit, contributing to missing an opportunity to start in the League Cup, acknowledging his naivety in handling himself as a Premier League footballer.

De Bruyne shed light on the reality of being out of favour at a club, noting the considerable decrease in attention during training. Feeling almost invisible at times, he eventually requested to leave, which happened during the January transfer window. Presently, he’s focused on regaining fitness after a prolonged injury layoff and aims to reclaim his spot in the City squad.
