Jordan Henderson, currently playing for Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, may encounter a £3 million tax bill if he decides to leave the club this month. The midfielder, who departed Liverpool for a three-year deal with Al-Ettifaq, is reportedly contemplating a return to the Premier League after only six months in Saudi Arabia.
Henderson’s contract includes tax-free wages of £700,000 per week, applicable if he fulfills the first two years of the agreement. However, any departure before completing two years would trigger the £3 million tax obligation. The 33-year-old has expressed regrets about the move, with interests from Premier League clubs, Celtic, and an unnamed German team. Henderson’s potential return to Europe could enhance his chances of being selected for Gareth Southgate’s England squad in Euro 2024.
Despite being appointed captain by Steven Gerrard, Henderson is yet to score in 19 appearances for Al-Ettifaq, who are facing challenges with Gerrard under mounting pressure and a recent drop to eighth place in the Saudi Pro League.
