The EFL has decided against implementing VAR in the upcoming two-legged semi-finals involving Chelsea versus Middlesbrough and Liverpool against Fulham. This choice stems from Middlesbrough’s lack of VAR technology at the Riverside Stadium, which is not utilized in the Championship.

In opting not to use VAR in any of the four semi-final matches, the EFL believed this to be a fairer approach rather than employing it selectively in some legs. A representative from the EFL clarified to The Telegraph that due to the technology’s unavailability at Middlesbrough, it was deemed equitable not to implement VAR across any of the semi-final fixtures.

However, the spokesperson confirmed that VAR would indeed be in operation for the final at Wembley Stadium, regardless of the teams competing, as the technology is already installed there.

This decision contrasts with the FA Cup’s approach, where VAR was utilized in some games but not available in others, causing controversy, especially for lower-league teams playing at home during the third round.

Chelsea, under Mauricio Pochettino’s management, are expected to be formidable contenders, seeking progression to the final to secure Pochettino’s first piece of English football silverware. Meanwhile, Liverpool aims to confidently advance against Fulham, aspiring to set up a rematch of the 2022 final, a contest they won on penalties.
