Due to a hamstring injury sustained by Lesley Ugochukwu against Wolves on Christmas Eve, sidelining him for up to six weeks, Chelsea is seeking midfield reinforcements. Ugochukwu had already missed a month earlier in the season, and this recent setback has created a void in the team. As reported by The Standard, this situation might offer an opportunity for Santos to showcase his skills under Mauricio Pochettino.

Although Ugochukwu has become an important player for Chelsea, featuring in 13 games across various competitions, his frequent injuries are a concern. However, his absence provides Santos a chance, especially after his challenging time at City Ground, making just two appearances under Steve Cooper.

Santos is now training with Pochettino at Cobham after joining Chelsea. Despite interest from Crystal Palace and other Championship clubs, he is determined to fight for a spot at Chelsea rather than rushing into another loan.

Furthermore, injuries to Romeo Lavia, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Enzo Fernandez’s hernia issue have left Pochettino short of options in midfield. This situation might lead to a potential debut for the 19-year-old Santos in January, who is often compared to Manchester United’s Casemiro due to similar traits.

Chelsea’s upcoming FA Cup match against Preston might come too soon for Santos, but with more training sessions, he could be considered for the following Premier League game against Fulham on January 13.
