French midfielder Paul Pogba, currently playing for Juventus, is confronting a potential four-year ban following doping allegations. Prosecutors in Rome are pushing for this severe penalty, with a hearing anticipated in early 2024. Pogba was provisionally suspended after testing positive for elevated levels of the banned substance DHEA, following Juventus’ victory against Udinese on August 20.

The naturally occurring hormone, DHEA, is on the world anti-doping prohibited list. If the ban is enforced, Pogba will be sidelined from football until September 2027, impacting his career into his mid-30s. Pogba attributes the positive test to supplements imported from the US, part of his post-injury recovery program.

While Juventus’ stance appears unsupportive, Pogba intends to plea for leniency, asserting that the breach was inadvertent. This plea is vital as it may affect Juve’s ability to terminate Pogba’s contract, running until 2026, allowing them to remove his Β£10 million annual salary from their wage bill.
