In an interview with StarPlus.com, Lionel Messi discussed his future with the national team, acknowledging that the MLS schedule and the level of competition might impact his playing standards. At 36 years old, however, he believes this opportunity aligns well for both himself and his family.

Since joining the league in July, Messi has made a significant impact in MLS, securing victories in the inaugural Leagues Cup and clinching the tournament’s Golden Boot. While recognizing that MLS doesn’t match the standards of Barcelona or PSG, he highlights the league’s growing talent pool and its increasing global prominence through deals like the Apple TV partnership, despite European-bound players. Despite this, he’s committed to maintaining a high level of play for his country in preparation for the 2024 Copa America.

Messi expressed, “I said it several times and it is a reality: I will always try to compete to the maximum and I am the first to know when I can be there and when I can’t. I am also aware that I went to a lesser league, but a lot happens because of the personal and the way one faces it and competes. As long as I feel that I’m fine and I can continue contributing, I’m going to do it [represent the national team].”

For the remainder of 2023, Messi won’t feature for Inter Miami, currently in their offseason. Their return is slated for the new year, with their first 2024 match being a friendly against the El Salvador national team.
