Everton may face yet another deduction in Premier League points, continuing a saga that left Toffees fans devastated. An independent commission penalized Everton with a 10-point deduction after acknowledging their violation of the league’s financial regulations, restricting clubs to losses not exceeding £105 million across three seasons. Everton expressed being “shocked and disappointed” by the ruling, intending to challenge it.

However, ahead of the December 31 deadline for all clubs to submit their 2022-23 season accounts to the Premier League, concerns have emerged within Everton’s leadership. There’s apprehension that using the same assessment method as before could land them in trouble again.

Reports from The Times suggest Everton might face an additional points deduction, possibly surpassing the initial 10 points. This deduction pushed Everton down to the 19th position in the league, placing them marginally above Burnley based solely on goal difference.

The initial punishment stemmed from interest-bearing loans utilized for the construction of their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium. Despite Everton’s calculations indicating £18 million in headroom, a pre-hearing revealed their accounting practices showed an overspend of £7.9 million.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Manchester and a Goodison Park season ticket holder, openly contested the decision’s validity, citing regulatory malpractice due to the introduction of new rules mid-process. Conversely, Premier League chairwoman Alison Britain firmly rebutted Burnham’s claims, stating the league entirely opposes such assertions.

During Everton’s 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United, fans protested the penalty by displaying pink cards adorned with the Premier League logo and the word “corrupt.”

Initially, the Premier League proposed a deduction of six points plus an additional point for every £5 million overspent (Everton breached by £19.5 million). However, this proposal was dismissed by the independent commission.
