Former Manchester United legend Lee Sharpe heavily criticized Andre Onana after his recent disastrous performance against Galatasaray in the Champions League.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper’s blunder led to Galatasaray’s equalizing goal, shifting the game’s dynamics and resulting in a 3-3 draw, effectively diminishing Manchester United’s chances of advancing to the knockout stage.

In an exclusive interview with Daily Star Sport via 888Sport, Sharpe emphasized that Onana needs to revisit the basics of goalkeeping to revive his career at Old Trafford. Despite acknowledging Onana’s positive attributes and ball-playing skills, Sharpe highlighted the keeper’s critical errors in handling and retaining possession, stating that swift improvement is imperative.

Onana’s arrival from Inter Milan for £47 million generated enthusiasm among United fans due to his previous success at Ajax and Inter, especially his proficiency in ball distribution. However, his initial tenure with United has been marred by several costly mistakes, including incidents against Bayern Munich, Brentford, and now Galatasaray.

Following his disappointing display against Galatasaray, a wave of United supporters took to social media demanding his removal from the starting lineup, with some advocating for the acquisition of a new goalkeeper in January. Sharpe, however, urged for patience but expressed skepticism about the abrupt departure of Onana’s predecessor, David de Gea.

Sharpe believed that letting go of De Gea was premature, considering the goalkeeper’s exceptional decade-long tenure at the club, marked by numerous accolades and consistent performances. He highlighted De Gea’s impact and suggested that parting ways with him might have been an oversight.

Sharpe, 52, had a remarkable career at Manchester United, playing over 200 games for the club between 1988 and 1996. He was part of the famed ‘Fergie’s Fledglings,’ breaking into the first team under Sir Alex Ferguson’s management and making a significant impact. Injuries eventually hampered his career, leading to shorter stints at other clubs before retiring in 2004 after spells at Exeter, Portsmouth, and Grindavik in Iceland.
