Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had hoped that Gabriel Jesus would be rested for Brazil’s highly-anticipated match against Argentina. However, to Arteta’s dismay, Jesus not only played but was the sole Gunners player to feature the entire game. The match, marred by fan violence before kick-off, created a tense atmosphere in the Maracana stadium.

Prior to the game, clashes between supporters escalated, leading riot police to confront Argentina fans. Amidst this chaos, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez attempted to intervene, trying to disarm an officer. Several fans were injured, and the game itself was aggressive, marked by tough tackles.

Arteta, who had deemed Jesus unfit, preferred the striker to continue recovery in London rather than travel to South America. However, Brazil coach Fernando Diniz disregarded Arsenal’s advice and included Jesus in the squad, playing him the full 90 minutes against Argentina. FIFA regulations allowed Brazil to call up Jesus despite Arsenal’s concerns.

Fortunately for Arteta, Jesus seems unharmed after the intense derby and might be available for Arsenal’s upcoming match against Brentford. Similarly, Gunners players Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes participated for over 70 minutes in the match. However, their performances were subpar, especially Magalhaes, who struggled defensively against Nicolas Otamendi, conceding the decisive goal.

With more recent game time, Martinelli and Magalhaes are expected to have a larger role in Arsenal’s next match against Brentford, unlike Jesus, who might need time to readjust.
