The 19-year-old midfielder had to leave a Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia due to a suspected knee ligament injury, leaving him in tears. It’s likely he’ll miss the rest of the 2023-24 season if it’s confirmed as an ACL problem.

This setback is a significant blow for the player, his club, and the national team. Defending La Liga champions Barcelona will suffer, especially since they’ll be missing a crucial part of Xavi’s plans. Mundo Deportivo suggests those at Camp Nou aren’t happy with how things unfolded.

Barcelona believes that unnecessary risks were taken with Gavi’s fitness in a match that wasn’t crucial – Spain had already qualified for next summer’s European Championship. Despite only two players retaining their starting positions from a previous game against Cyprus, Gavi was one of them.

Marta Ramon reports that Barcelona holds De La Fuente accountable for Gavi’s injury. There were concerns about potential fatigue in a competitive game, and Barcelona is questioning why common sense wasn’t considered, raising tough questions for the RFEF (Spanish Football Federation).

However, the manager rejected their ‘complaints’, stating, “I understand Barca’s complaints, but, if it wasn’t Gavi, it could have happened to someone else.”

“This can happen in a La Liga match, in training or in any situation. Sometimes we don’t realise the risk that each moment entails when you put on your boots. It was an accident, a misfortune, but Gavi was perfectly ready to play.”
