Everton is set to contest the deduction of points imposed by the Premier League, following their unexpected loss of 10 points. An independent commission, tasked with reviewing the club’s breach of financial rules concerning profits and sustainability, released its findings last Friday.

The Premier League referred Everton to this commission back in March after conducting audits of financial records for the 2021-22 season.

The issue revolves around a tax concern related to loans for Everton’s upcoming Bramley-Moore dock stadium, where they plan to relocate next season.

Premier League regulations permit clubs to incur a maximum loss of £105m over three years.

However, Everton reported losses amounting to £371.8m over the past three years.

Prior to this setback, Sean Dyche’s team occupied the 14th spot during the international break, securing victories in three of their last five top-flight matches.

Their sudden drop to 19th position, just ahead of Burnley due to goal difference, leaves them with a mere four points from 12 games.

In response, Everton has issued a statement expressing shock and disappointment regarding the Commission’s ruling, deeming the sporting penalty disproportionately severe.

The club has declared its intent to appeal this decision to the Premier League, initiating an appeal process to present their case before an Appeal Board as per the league’s regulations.

Everton contends that it has been forthright and transparent in its dealings with the Premier League, maintaining the integrity of the process.

They refute the allegation that they acted in bad faith, a claim they assert was not initially made by the Premier League during the proceedings. The club deems the severity of the imposed sanction as both unjust and unwarranted, considering the evidence presented.

They also express interest in monitoring other cases involving the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. However, Everton refrains from further comment on the matter until the conclusion of the appeal process.

This points deduction stands as the highest ever imposed in Premier League history, surpassing the nine-point penalty given to Portsmouth in 2010. Everton, now positioned in the relegation zone, will face Manchester United at Goodison Park on Sunday, November 26 (4:30 pm), a game broadcast live on Sky Sports.
