John Terry didn’t hold back in his response to James Maddison’s sly comment on his Instagram post regarding Chelsea’s 4-1 victory over Tottenham.

In a tumultuous match on Monday night, the Blues secured a significant win. Dejan Kulusevski opened the scoring for Spurs before Cristian Romero received a red card for a reckless challenge on Enzo Fernandez in the penalty area, leading to Cole Palmer converting a penalty.

Tottenham found themselves down to nine players following Destiny Udogie’s second-half red card. Chelsea capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Nicolas Jackson netting his first Premier League hat-trick. The game also saw a whopping five disallowed goals.

Chelsea icon John Terry savoured the impressive win from the comfort of his home and marked the occasion by dancing with his wife, Toni, in an Instagram post. Terry playfully captioned the video, “When Chelsea beat Spurs 4-1 on a school night and the tequila comes out, and you end up dancing and singing on the bar.”

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison, who missed Monday’s game due to injury, noticed Terry’s post and felt compelled to respond. He cheekily commented, “Jesus, you have your eyes closed when it was 11 vs 11 (in the) first 15 (minutes) JT?”

Maddison was alluding to Tottenham’s strong start in the match, during which Kulusevski scored and Son Heung-min had a goal disallowed for offside. Terry didn’t let Maddison’s comment go unchallenged and swiftly put the Spurs star in his place, replying, “Don’t worry mate you will get used to it.”

Terry was referring to Tottenham’s historically poor record against Chelsea, with the Spurs only winning eight out of their 64 Premier League encounters in the 21st century, compared to Chelsea’s 28 victories.

Despite Terry’s jesting, Tottenham’s season has been far more successful than Chelsea’s. Monday night’s loss marked Tottenham’s first Premier League defeat this season, and they currently hold the second position in the table, trailing leaders Manchester City by just one point.

In contrast, Chelsea finds itself in 10th place in the Premier League standings, trailing Arsenal by nine points in fourth place and Tottenham by 11 points. The two-time European champions have already suffered three home defeats this season to Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Brentford.

Both teams underwent managerial changes over the summer. Ange Postecoglou has introduced a confident and free-spirited style of football at Tottenham, while former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is struggling to harness Chelsea’s expensive squad’s potential.

As for Maddison’s fitness, Postecoglou hopes to have the midfielder available for Tottenham’s upcoming game against Wolves on Saturday. Maddison is a crucial part of their team, having contributed three goals and five assists this season.

Maddison made a £40 million move to Spurs in June from the relegated Leicester. When asked about Maddison’s injury, Postecoglou commented, “He got a knock on the ankle, we were down one man already. It made sense to make a couple of changes at that point.”
