David Raya has openly acknowledged the frustration within the Arsenal dressing room in the wake of their contentious loss to Newcastle.

Raya took responsibility for the moment when Anthony Gordon scored the winning goal shortly after the one-hour mark, as he struggled to deal with Joe Willock’s cross. The ball eventually reached Gordon via Joelinton, who then fired it into the net, sealing Newcastle’s victory.

The goal underwent extensive scrutiny by VAR’s Andy Madley, who confirmed that the ball had not crossed the touchline, Joelinton had not committed a foul against Gabriel, and Gordon was not in an offside position. However, the decision to award the goal has left Raya and his teammates seething.

Raya expressed his perspective, saying, “What I could see was the ball went out of play, and then after going to the dressing room, looking back at the goal, it’s a big foul on Gabi. He’s pushing him with two hands on his back when he’s about to clear the ball.”

He continued, “On the other hand, it could have been an offside position, that’s harder to see. But the ball is out of play and the foul is a massive decision that’s just going to cost us some points. We’re really frustrated.”

Raya emphasized that Arsenal deserved, at the very least, a draw from the match, considering their strong defensive performance and their ability to control their opponents. He also acknowledged that they must now focus on their upcoming fixtures.

“We defended very well. I don’t think they had a shot on target, we kept them very quiet, we defended very well, and I thought we played very well. We got into really good positions, we were positive,” Raya stated.

“We were winning duels, we were competing against one of the teams in the division, especially away from home – it’s a tough place to come. So, we are very happy with the performance but very frustrated with the result.”

He added, “We’re going to have to start winning games again, and hopefully, we can go on a longer unbeaten run in the Premier League. Now our focus is Sevilla on Wednesday at home, that’s another massive game for us. All we can say, is we want the three points.”

Raya’s sentiments echoed those of his manager, Mikel Arteta, who expressed his frustration in a fiery post-match press conference. Arteta characterized the goal’s allowance as “embarrassing and disgraceful.”

He stated, “I feel embarrassed. But I have to be the one now coming here to try to defend the club and please ask for help because it’s an absolute disgrace that this goal is allowed, it’s an absolute disgrace.”

Arteta continued, “It’s an absolute disgrace. Again, I feel embarrassed, I’ve been more than 20 years in this country, and this is nowhere near the level to describe this as the best league in the world. I am sorry.”
