The former manager of Chelsea has been identified as a potential candidate for a new role, following the departure of Sweden’s former manager, Janne Anderson, who stepped down after the national team failed to qualify for Euro 2024.

Graham Potter, aged 48, has a background in Swedish football from his time at Ostersunds, which also means he has a good understanding of the Swedish game. Now, he appears to be on track to potentially lead the national team, following an underwhelming stint at Stamford Bridge.

In an interview with TV4, Andrea Mllerberg, the new general secretary of the Swedish Football Association, confirmed that Graham Potter is being considered for the position. Mllerberg stated, “You can say this: The list that is on names and that I have been sent to me or that I am reading… it is clear that he is part of that list.”

“We’ll see what we filter down and who is interested in this role. You probably have to be passionate about wanting to be the national team coach, especially given that it is different from club football.”

“You may have to be ready with certain parts.”

Currently, Sweden is ranked third in their Euro 2024 qualifying group, having won only two of their six qualifiers.

Graham Potter had a remarkable journey with the Swedish club, Ostersunds, situated just outside the Arctic Circle. Taking charge of the club in 2011 when they were in the fourth tier, he swiftly achieved promotion in his first season.

By 2015, he had led Ostersunds to the top tier of Swedish football. Their victory in the Svenska Cupen in 2017 marked the beginning of a European adventure, including matches against teams like Arsenal. They overcame notable teams like Galatasaray and PAOK on their way to the Europa League group stage, where they finished second in a group featuring Athletic Bilbao, Hertha Berlin, and Zorya Luhansk.

Ostersunds then faced Arsenal in the Round of 32, losing 3-0 at home but securing a historic 2-1 victory at the Emirates. Potter was subsequently recruited by Swansea before Brighton came calling.

At Brighton, he earned a strong reputation for playing attractive football with limited resources. Following a change in ownership, Chelsea took a chance on him, but his tenure there proved to be thoroughly disappointing, leading to his dismissal.

SunSport reported that Potter has been identified as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, should the Dutchman be removed from his position. He has also been linked to several prominent European clubs, including Napoli, Lyon, and Rangers, but has yet to secure a new managerial role.
