The 45-year-old individual suffered facial injuries when projectiles, such as stones and glass bottles, struck and shattered a window on Lyon’s team bus. This incident unfolded while the Ligue 1 team was en route to the Stade Vélodrome to face Marseille.

As a result of the broken window, shards of glass hit Grosso, leading to an immediate need for medical attention upon reaching the stadium. Shortly after the event, he was photographed being transported on a stretcher with a severe laceration just above his eye.

The full extent of his injury became apparent on Monday morning, as a new picture showed the Lyon manager with stitches around his eye and on his eyelid. In total, he required 13 stitches during the treatment process.

Additionally, Grosso’s assistant, Raffaelle Longo, also sustained injuries in the incident. French authorities have arrested nine individuals in connection with the attack, and investigations are ongoing to locate other potential suspects.

Following the incident, the match between Marseille and Lyon was postponed. Lyon president John Textor expressed his anger, stating that Grosso was unable to engage in conversation due to having shards of glass in his face.

He further detailed that, aside from the broken window, other objects, including beer bottles, struck Grosso in the forehead.

Marseille later issued a club statement condemning the actions of the fans involved in the incident, deeming them “unacceptable” and expressing their wish for Fabio Grosso’s swift recovery.

The statement emphasized that such violent behaviour had no place in the world of football or in society. Marseille pledged to cooperate with the decision made by the Ligue de Football Professionnel to reschedule the match for Sunday, October 29, at the Stade Orange Vélodrome, under the best possible conditions.

This unfortunate incident had marred a planned celebration, leaving 65,000 fans unable to attend the match.
