Hartlepool United has suspended midfielder Oliver Finney after he was charged with rape. The 25-year-old is set to appear in Crewe Magistrates’ Court on November 13, following confirmation of the charge by Cheshire Police. The alleged incident occurred in Cheshire last year.

Newcastle-under-Lyme native Finney joined Hartlepool from Crewe Alexandra in January on a permanent deal. He has made 20 National League appearances and scored two goals. The club is currently 12th in the table.

A Hartlepool spokesperson stated, “The allegation dates back to before the player joined Hartlepool United. Upon being informed of the allegation and investigation for the first time, the club immediately placed the player on suspension pending the investigation outcome.”

Finney, who scored 17 goals in 124 appearances for Crewe, joined Hartlepool last season before their relegation from League Two. He had previously spent time on loan at Nantwich Town and Halesowen Town in non-league. Hartlepool has won seven of their 17 games this season and is currently competing in the National League.
