Director Fisher Stevens recently expressed his surprise at the extent of “abuse” suffered by David and Victoria Beckham following David’s infamous 1998 World Cup red card. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stevens admitted, “I couldn’t believe the abuse they took.”

Stevens had no prior knowledge of the intense scrutiny the Beckhams endured until David shared his experiences when they began their project.  The abuse was global, even reaching Los Angeles, but Stevens praised David’s resilience and his ability to overcome adversity. He added, “To me, that’s so admirable. I don’t know if many people could handle it the way David did.”

Stevens also highlighted the differences between David’s and Victoria’s communication styles. Victoria is more open about her emotions, while David tends to keep things private. According to Stevens, David is now at a point in his life where he is willing to revisit and share moments he had previously kept to himself. He acknowledged the cultural differences, noting that British individuals are generally less open about their emotions compared to Americans.
