UEFA has officially confirmed the outcome of the Belgium-Sweden match, which was abandoned after the first half due to the Brussels attacks, as a 1-1 draw. The game was halted after two Swedish fans tragically lost their lives on the day of the match.
Both teams’ players refused to resume the game, leading to the referee’s decision to stop the match. UEFA recorded it as a 1-1 draw. The fate of the results from the first half remains uncertain under European rules. A UEFA spokesperson stated, “The Belgium-Sweden match was called off after the first half due to the Brussels attack.
As it was 1-1 at the time of cancellation, each team was awarded one point. Whether the remaining second half will be played is pending an executive committee decision. The Belgian and Swedish football federations are yet to make a final call. The 1-1 result won’t affect their qualifying chances, as Belgium has already secured a place in Euro 2024. The postponed matches will resume next November, and the play-offs and finals await the group stage’s conclusion.”
Sweden expressed condolences for the deceased fans and condemned the Brussels attack.
