The initial concern surrounding Kylian Mbappé’s recent goal drought in all competitions appears to have been an overreaction. Mbappé, in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match for France, scored two goals in their 2-1 victory over the Netherlands.
Moreover, these two goals, one of which was an exceptional world-class strike from outside the penalty area, have brought the 24-year-old forward tantalizingly close to claiming the top scorer title for the Euro qualifying round.
After seven matchdays, Mbappé has netted six goals, with only two players ahead of him in the goal-scoring charts: Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (7) and Romelu Lukaku (9).
It remains to be seen whether Mbappé will participate in all of France’s remaining Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Gibraltar and Greece. France has already secured their spot in next summer’s tournament, so Coach Deschamps might experiment with the squad to assess other talents.
At the very least, the 2018 FIFA World Cup champion could make an appearance in the match against the Gibraltar national team at the Allianz Riviera in Nice on November 18th.
