AC Milan takes its first official step towards a new stadium, parting ways with San Siro

A new 70,000-seat stadium will be constructed in the city's south as part of AC Milan's plans to leave their legendary San Siro home.

Ac Milan Takes Its First Step To Part Ways With San Siro

The football club has submitted initial proposals to the local city council in San Donato, a suburb adjacent to their current stadium, the San Siro. Since 1926, the San Siro has been Milan’s cherished football arena, but it has not undergone substantial renovations since the 1990 World Cup. Shared by city rivals Inter as joint tenants, numerous attempts to modernize the facility have proven unsuccessful.

In August, a local heritage commission designated the stadium as having “cultural interest,” preventing its demolition and thereby prompting both clubs to seek alternative options. AC Milan has ambitious plans that extend beyond a new stadium, including the construction of a club headquarters, hotel, club store, and museum.

Paolo Scaroni, the chairman of AC Milan, expressed the club’s commitment to securing a world-class stadium as part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure the team’s success and sustainability. He emphasized that while the preliminary proposals represent an early stage in the transformation process, they underscore the ownership’s dedication to fostering AC Milan’s growth on and off the field.

The San Siro, also known as Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, is renowned globally for its iconic red girders and spiral towers. However, the stadium’s interior facilities are rudimentary and in dire need of refurbishment. Renovating the existing structure would entail substantial costs, leading both Inter and AC Milan to explore alternative solutions for several years.

In 2021, the two clubs unveiled plans to collaborate on a new 60,000-seat stadium to be constructed on the current San Siro site, dubbed ‘The Cathedral.’ Unfortunately, this project encountered protests, appeals, and objections, culminating in the recent announcement by the heritage commission, effectively quashing any hopes of demolishing the existing stadium.

Much like AC Milan, Inter is now exploring the possibility of constructing their own stadium at a different location, with a site in Assago, a small town south of Milan, currently under evaluation.
