Casemiro stars in Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Crystal Palace in Carabao Cup

With a straightforward 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace, Manchester United advances to the Carabao Cup fourth round. Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro, and Anthony Martial scored to give Erik ten Hag's team the victory.

Erik ten Hag fielded a significantly altered lineup compared to Saturday’s Premier League victory over Burnley. Nevertheless, Manchester United maintained control throughout the match. Alejandro Garnacho found the net first in the 21st minute, followed by Casemiro’s headed goal from a corner delivered by the returning Mason Mount just six minutes later.

Casemiro then turned playmaker, providing an assist for the third goal ten minutes into the second half, where Anthony Martial expertly converted his superb cross. This performance lifted spirits at Old Trafford after a challenging start to the season.

Crystal Palace, also making extensive changes to their lineup, only started to pose a threat after introducing Eberechi Eze in the second half. However, by then, it was too late, as the result secured back-to-back victories for Manchester United as they aim to get their season back on track.

From the outset, United’s dominance was evident, with full debutant Sofyan Amrabat, playing as a makeshift left-back, shifting inward to ensure midfield superiority, leaving Palace outmatched.

The opening goal came when Mason Mount distributed a pass to Facundo Pellistri, whose layoff set up Diogo Dalot to cross the ball for Garnacho to slot home a low finish past Palace’s debutant goalkeeper, Rob Holding.

Palace suffered another setback when Dean Henderson, making his debut for the club, was forced off due to injury against his former team and replaced by Sam Johnstone.

Casemiro added to United’s lead easily, shaking off Jeffrey Schlupp to head the ball into the far corner from Mason Mount’s outswinging delivery. Mount, who hadn’t played since August due to a thigh injury, was substituted at half-time after a promising return.

United’s dominance persisted in the second half. They capitalized on their advantage when Amrabat’s intended cross was intercepted, with Casemiro then setting up Martial for an exceptional first-time finish from a tight angle.

It took until the 67th minute for Palace to register their first shot on goal, with Nathaniel Clyne sending a speculative effort over from distance. They came close through Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta, but Andre Onana was alert and denied their attempts.

Meanwhile, United continued to threaten, with substitute Jonny Evans forcing a reflex save from Johnstone from a corner, and Victor Lindelof and Garnacho also testing the Palace goalkeeper late in the game.

Ultimately, Manchester United’s three goals were more than enough to secure the victory, lifting the spirits within the club and enabling Erik ten Hag to plan for another successful Carabao Cup campaign.
