Erling Haaland, the star striker for Manchester City, tapped into his inner Viking spirit during a special one-off photoshoot in the picturesque Norwegian fjords. This unique opportunity allowed him to take a break from his hectic football schedule and reconnect with his roots in Norway.
Vikings have a deep historical connection with Norway, and City fans have often shown their support by donning cultural attire reminiscent of Haaland’s heritage during matches. Now, Haaland has decided to personally embrace this tradition.
Teaming up with the renowned fine-art photographer David Yarrow, the 23-year-old athlete ventured into the frigid waters of a Norwegian fjord for this extraordinary photo session. While Haaland typically shies away from the media spotlight, he was persuaded to participate in this project after a conversation between his father, Alfie, and the Scottish photographer.
Draped in fur chest covering and donning boots, Haaland confidently wielded a traditional Viking axe and shield. His signature golden locks, usually tied in a ponytail, cascaded over his shoulders, adding to the dramatic effect.
Yarrow described the technical challenges they faced during the shoot, stating, ‘We had some rubber boots made specially for Erling because in these fjords in Norway there are a lot of little oyster shells.”
“As we walked into the fjord that afternoon, I remember thinking, he better not stand on a sharp rock, as the subsequent lawsuit would finish my career. So we walked very gingerly – baby step by baby step – until he was waist deep, which of course is further out to sea than most.”
He continued, “It was a very bizarre and surreal experience, particularly when he is a foot taller than me, but we had a laugh and everything was done very quickly. ‘I can’t think of a better person to be dressed up as a Viking. It suits him perfectly.”
Reflecting on the collaboration, Yarrow expressed, “This was such a privilege to do and I undertook the project with humility and a sense of responsibility. His time is precious and I did not want to waste it.”
“Erling was a pleasure to work with and the reaction to the image in Norway has been overwhelming, I hope we can raise some good amounts for charity as a result of this hour together. I thank the Haaland family for trusting me with the job.”
These limited-edition images are available for purchase at a price ranging from £35,000 to £40,000, with all proceeds from the sales going to charity. The charitable cause in Norway will be selected by the City superstar himself.
Yarrow’s work has raised over £11 million since 2016, and he is delighted that his photography can once again contribute to a worthy charitable cause. He concluded, “Some assignments are such a privilege and come with a sense of gratitude that transcends any need for commercial gain.”
“Like so many people, I would’ve done this for nothing – which is exactly what we did.”
