Erik Ten Hag reaches out to Andre Onana with words of comfort following Manchester United’s mistake versus Bayern Munich

Man United lost 4-3 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena after Andre Onana made a costly error.

Erik Ten Hag Praises Andre Onana For Taking Responsibilty

Erik ten Hag firmly believes that goalkeeper Andre Onana will recover from his costly mistake in Manchester United’s Champions League loss to Bayern Munich.

In the 28th minute, Onana allowed Leroy Sane’s weak shot to slip past him, giving Bayern Munich a 1-0 lead. United then conceded another goal just four minutes later. Despite United reducing the deficit three times in the second half, they ultimately suffered a 4-3 defeat, marking their third consecutive loss and their fourth in the last five matches.

Following the game, Onana requested to speak to the media and took full responsibility for his error. Ten Hag pledged that the United players would stand by the £47.2 million acquisition.

“I think he shows that he takes the responsibility and shows personality and the personality he needs to get in high levels,” Ten Hag said. “But that’s not only about him but I think it’s about the team’s performance.”

“So we have to support him on the pitch, we have to help him. but it doesn’t only count for Andre, it counts for all the players on the pitch. They have to understand they are 11, they are in the same boat and they have to be on the same page to get results.”

“In football, there will always be mistakes, so don’t make it bigger than it is. As I said already, it was not only Andre with that goal, it was after that.”

“In the second half, he made great saves for us, he showed his capabilities and he will bounce back for us, he is an important player.”

United has conceded 14 goals in six matches, with Onana letting in stoppable shots in the recent victory against Nottingham Forest and last week’s loss to Brighton.

The 27-year-old expressed his thoughts to TNT Sports, saying, “It’s challenging. We began the game well, but after my error, we lost control. It’s a tough situation for me, and I feel I let the team down. It’s because of me that we didn’t secure the victory in this game.

“We have to move on, it’s the life of the goalkeeper. They hadn’t created any chances, their first shot on target I made the mistake and the team went down. We fought until the end but I have to recognise that we didn’t win because of me.”

“I still have a lot to prove (to the United fans). My start hasn’t been so good, not how I wanted. It’s difficult. It was an opportunity to bounce back and yeah, it’s tough, a tough time and we have to be together and learn from our mistake.”
