25 August (Reuters) Joelinton, a midfielder for Newcastle United who was substituted against Manchester City last weekend, is expected to play against Liverpool on Sunday, according to manager Eddie Howe. This allayes fears over the Brazil international’s fitness.

Joelinton hobbled off the field at the halfway point of Newcastle’s 1-0 loss to Premier League champions City at the Etihad Stadium. Joelinton has established himself as a key member of Newcastle’s midfield with fellow countryman Bruno Guimaraes.

“Joe is alright. Fingers crossed he’s well,” Howe told reporters on Friday. “We didn’t see him in the early part of the week, but he trained in the latter part.

With a victory at home on Sunday, Newcastle, which is now eighth in the standings after defeating Aston Villa 5-1 on the opening weekend, could pass fifth-placed Liverpool.

Liverpool, led by Juergen Klopp, are unbeaten in their past 13 meetings with the Tyneside club and were the only team to defeat Newcastle both at home and away last season, winning 2-1 at Anfield and 2-0 at St James’ Park.

After losing Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia in the offseason, Liverpool is rebuilding their team and adding Alexis Mac Allister from Argentina, Dominik Szoboszlai from Hungary, and Wataru Endo from Japan.

“Last year, two losses left us feeling frustrated. The game at Anfield was challenging, and the match at home was unpleasant in a different sense, according to Howe.
