Sevilla beats Roma to win their 7th Europa League

In just 17 years, Sevilla has won their 7th Europa League title thanks to Montiel’s game-winning penalty kick in the World Cup final shootout.

Sevilla defeated Roma on penalties in a boisterous Puskas Arena in Budapest to win their record-tying eighth Europa League championship. After a 1-1 draw and a missed penalty attempt by Roma’s Roger Ibanez and Gianluca Mancini, Gonzalo Montiel, who had scored the winning penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final against France, duplicated the feat for the Spanish team.

The Spanish team has now won all seven of the competition’s championship games, with captain Jesus Navas playing a role in their initial victory over Middlesbrough in 2006. Despite not placing in the top four in the most recent La Liga season, they managed to earn a spot in the Champions League for the following year.

For Roma and their manager Jose Mourinho, who had won all five of the previous European finals he had been a part of and led the club to its first Europa Conference League victory last season, there will be a sense that things could have been very different. Paulo Dybala, a member of Montiel’s international team, had justifiably given Roma the lead in the opening frame when he raced onto Italy defender Mancini’s sharp cross and skillfully guided a low shot past Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou into the bottom right corner.

However, the Serie A team lost control of a tense game that saw 14 players and coaches receive bookings, including Mourinho. Leonardo Spinazzola also tested Bounou before the break. Ten minutes after the break, Sevilla, who had been pressing for an equalizer, pulled even when Navas’ cross from the right deflected off the unfortunate Mancini and into his own net.

Despite Tammy Abraham and Ibanez’s missed opportunities from close range and Andrea Belotti’s mishit from Lorenzo Pellegrini’s deft free kick, Roma had the better chances to win the game in regulation.
