Brazilian footballer Gabriel “Gabigol” Barbosa has been suspended for two years following a doping fraud investigation. The decision was made by the Anti-Doping Sports Court of Justice in a close 5-4 vote against the former Inter Milan striker, 27 years old.
The investigation centered around an incident on April 8, 2021, when anti-doping officers arrived at Flamengo’s training ground to conduct surprise drug tests ahead of a match. Barbosa allegedly delayed his test, taking it hours after his teammates, which led to suspicions of doping fraud. Barbosa, who joined Flamengo permanently in 2020 after loan spells, has the option to appeal the decision. If the ban is upheld, it would be backdated to April 2021, effectively ruling him out until April 2025.
The striker has had a successful career at Flamengo, scoring 155 goals in 276 games and earning a recall to the Brazil national team in 2021. However, this ban could significantly impact his future, especially as his contract with Flamengo expires at the end of 2024.
