WATCH: André Onana left alone after heartbreaking blunders in Champions League

Football supporters can be cruel, and Andre Onana of Manchester United wasn't immune to their derision when his mistake allowed Galatasaray to salvage a Champions League tie against the Red Devils.

Even as Manchester United faced a near-certain Champions League elimination at the hands of Galatasaray, the jokes at Andre Onana’s expense continued. The team squandered a two-goal lead, resulting in a 3-3 draw and leaving them rooted at the bottom of Group A with just one game remaining. To advance, they now need to defeat group leaders Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on December 13 while hoping for a draw between Copenhagen and Galatasaray in their final match.

Much of the blame fell on Onana after he conceded two Hakim Ziyech free-kicks, especially the second goal that should have been easily stopped at this level. The Cameroonian goalkeeper appeared visibly upset on the pitch after the match, inviting further criticism from social media users.

Onana, aged 27, stood forlornly with hands on hips, frustratedly removing his gloves—a moment that drew comments like, “He even dropped his gloves…” and another jest stating, “I’m not convinced Onana is a proper goalkeeper.” This recent disappointment adds to a series of avoidable errors since his £52 million summer signing with United.

Despite being praised for his distribution skills upon reuniting with former Ajax mentor Erik ten Hag, Onana’s performance fell short as he managed to hit the mark with less than 50% of his passes, contrasting sharply with Fernando Muslera’s 78% pass accuracy for Galatasaray.

Although Onana did make crucial saves that could have led to a more damaging defeat against the Turks, critics argue that Galatasaray resorted to long-range shots due to their belief that United’s No.1 was a weak link.

While United acquired Onana from Inter Milan in the summer, they also secured Turkey international Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce for a significantly lower fee. Ten Hag has maintained loyalty to Onana, but if issues persist in the goalkeeping position, the former Super Lig prospect Bayindir might find himself with an elevated role sooner rather than later.
