Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli as a replacement for outgoing veteran Scott Carson. The 33-year-old, who hasn’t featured in a first-team match since Chelsea’s FA Cup clash with Chesterfield in January 2022, is expected to join the Premier League champions as their new third-choice shot-stopper.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal, stating that Bettinelli has agreed to terms and will travel with the squad to the FIFA Club World Cup. Despite being on Chelsea’s books since 2021, Bettinelli has not played in the Premier League since October 2018, when he conceded four goals in Fulham’s loss to Cardiff.

Bettinelli is unlikely to feature ahead of Ederson or Stefan Ortega, but follows in the footsteps of Scott Carson, who made just two appearances for City but collected numerous medals during his tenure. Bettinelli will hope for similar success and stability in Manchester.
