Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly furious with the club after a sudden change in stance regarding his release clause. The Swedish forward, who enjoyed a phenomenal season with 54 goals and 13 assists, believed he had a gentleman’s agreement allowing him to leave for £59 million.
This included £51m upfront, well below his official £84m release clause. However, Portuguese outlet Record reports Sporting now insist on receiving at least £67m, leaving Gyokeres feeling betrayed. Manchester United, where his former boss Ruben Amorim now manages, is among the top clubs eyeing the prolific 27-year-old. Arsenal is also monitoring the situation closely.
Despite his desire to move on, Gyokeres admitted recently that his future remains uncertain, saying: “I don’t know what’s going to happen. Nobody can predict the future.” The striker flourished under Amorim, and a reunion at Old Trafford could be on the cards, if United meet Sporting’s revised valuation.
