Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk, who began his professional journey with Groningen in the Eredivisie, has made it clear that he has no intentions of returning to the Dutch league before retiring.
Speaking to Voetbal International, the 33-year-old said, “Let me be very clear: I will not return to the Netherlands. That chapter was important at the start of my career, but I don’t see myself ending it in the Eredivisie. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, and going back isn’t part of the plan.”
Van Dijk recently put an end to speculation about his Liverpool future by signing a contract extension that will keep him at Anfield until the summer of 2027. After impressive spells at Celtic, Southampton, and now Liverpool, the towering centre-back seems committed to competing at the top level for as long as possible, rather than winding down in his homeland.
While his plans post-2027 remain uncertain, for now, Van Dijk is focused on club and country. After playing a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Premier League-winning campaign, he could feature for the Netherlands in their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifier against Malta on Tuesday before taking a well-earned summer break.
