In December 2024, Michail Antonio was involved in a life-threatening car accident that left him with multiple severe injuries and required an emergency airlift. The West Ham striker, who also represents Jamaica internationally, is not expected to return to the pitch until at least midway through the next season—if he is able to play again at all.
West Ham United has stood by Antonio throughout his recovery process. However, with his current contract set to expire at the end of June, the club faces a challenging decision. While the Hammers proposed a short-term extension with significantly reduced wages, Antonio expressed his desire for a long-term deal with higher pay. As of now, the club has listed him as a free transfer for administrative compliance but stated that a definitive decision on his future will be made only when the time feels “right and appropriate.”
In their official retained list for summer 2025, the club explained:
“Given Michail Antonio’s unique circumstances following the serious road accident in December 2024, no formal decision regarding his future will be made or announced until a suitable time. Since his contract is due to expire on 30 June, he will be included as a free transfer in the Premier League’s retained list process for the 2024/25 season.
“As a long-standing, highly-respected player and a beloved figure within the West Ham community, the club’s main focus is on supporting Michail personally as he works towards returning to top-level football.”
Antonio continues his rehabilitation under the club’s guidance and has shared glimpses of his physical therapy on social media. At 35, his professional future remains uncertain, but he has publicly reaffirmed his commitment to making a comeback.
