As the revamped Club World Cup approaches this summer, Manchester City star Phil Foden has made it clear that both he and his teammates are determined to claim victory in the inaugural edition of the tournament. The England international is also eager to deliver strong individual performances throughout the competition.
Speaking to FIFA ahead of the tournament’s kickoff, Foden expressed his excitement: “Yeah, very excited. It’s a gathering of the best teams from around the world, which is something new for us to experience. I think it’s a great competition to have, especially as preparation for the upcoming season. It feels like an excellent warm-up, and hopefully, we can challenge the best teams and aim to win.”
He went on to highlight the significance of being the first team to lift the trophy: “That’s definitely part of the motivation. I’ve spoken with some of the lads, and being the first to have our name on that trophy would be fantastic. With the talent we have in our squad, I’m confident we have what it takes. So yeah, I’m really looking forward to it.”
When asked about his personal and team goals, Foden added: “The obvious target is to win it. Personally, I want to enjoy the experience, compete against top players, and perform at my best. That’s my focus.”
Foden has faced a challenging season that contrasts sharply with his outstanding 2023/24 campaign, where he was honored as the Men’s PFA Players’ Player of the Year. After contributing to 40 goals last season, he managed just 16 this time around and was occasionally left out of Pep Guardiola’s starting lineup. Clearly, the 25-year-old is motivated to turn things around quickly.
Manchester City will begin their Club World Cup journey on June 18 against Wydad AC, with group stage matches against Al Ain and Juventus set for later this month.
