Arne Slot insists Salah and Van Dijk contract drama didn’t derail Liverpool’s title charge

Liverpool began the season with Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold all in the final year of their contracts. While Salah and Van Dijk have since signed extensions, Alexander-Arnold has confirmed his departure.

Liverpool entered the season with contract uncertainties hanging over three key players — Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold — all of whom were entering the final year of their current deals. While Salah and Van Dijk have since committed their futures to the club by signing new contracts in recent weeks, Alexander-Arnold has confirmed he will depart this summer, marking the end of an era for the homegrown star.

There were concerns earlier in the season that the unresolved contract situations, particularly involving Salah and Van Dijk, might disrupt Liverpool’s pursuit of the Premier League title. However, those fears proved unfounded. Under Arne Slot’s leadership, the Reds surged past Arsenal to claim the title in dominant fashion.

Slot, speaking to BBC Sport, made it clear that negotiations off the pitch never became a distraction for him or his players. “About 80% of the contract work was handled independently by the club, and I was kept in the loop,” he explained. “I prefer it that way. In this league, your full focus needs to be on preparing the team for the next match.”

Slot emphasized that because the players themselves were unaffected, there was no need for additional management. “If they’d been unsettled, I would’ve stepped in to support them. But the focus remained sharp. Competing deep into both the Premier League and Champions League helped keep everyone locked in on the football.”

He added: “For Mo and Virgil, the true highlight of the season wasn’t signing their new deals — it was lifting the league trophy. That’s what it’s all about. Contracts and money are secondary when you’re chasing history.”

With Alexander-Arnold now confirmed to be leaving on a free transfer, Liverpool have already moved swiftly to address the gap. The Reds are on course to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen as his replacement at right-back.
