Real Madrid icon Luka Modric officially announced on Thursday that he will leave the club this summer, bringing an end to a legendary 13-year journey. During his time with Los Blancos, Modric amassed an incredible list of honors, including six Champions League titles and the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2018. He also became the oldest player to represent the Spanish giants, further cementing his legacy. In response to the announcement, teammate and long-time international rival Kylian Mbappe shared a moving tribute on social media.

Posting on Instagram, Mbappe wrote:
“Brate, I was fortunate to play and share a dressing room with you this season. It gave me a closer look at what true GREATNESS is. Beyond being one of the greatest players in football history, you’re an incredible human being. You’ve written your name into the legacy of the world’s biggest club and achieved everything there is to win. But your most priceless achievement is the universal respect and admiration you’ve earned. Thank you for everything, LEGEND.”

Modric joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and was initially labeled the worst signing of the season by Spanish outlet MARCA. However, he went on to defy expectations with an extraordinary career marked by consistent brilliance and remarkable longevity, improving with age like fine wine. He is set to make one final appearance in a Madrid shirt at the revamped FIFA Club World Cup next month, where he could cap off his career with a 29th major honor. Currently, his tally of 28 trophies makes him the most decorated player in Real Madrid history.

On Saturday, May 24, Modric will bid farewell to the Bernabeu in front of a devoted home crowd as Real Madrid host Real Sociedad in their season finale. The evening will also mark the departure of head coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is set to take charge of the Brazil national team, and long-time squad member Lucas Vázquez, both of whom are expected to receive warm send-offs from fans.
