Newcastle United are reportedly laying plans to build a new stadium that would become the third-largest football ground in England. The Saudi-owned club aims to transform itself into a European powerhouse, and a state-of-the-art stadium is central to that vision.
The proposed location is Leazes Park, near their iconic St James’ Park, which has stood since the 1800s. The new ground would feature a capacity of around 65,000—larger than Anfield, the Emirates, and Tottenham’s stadium. Only Old Trafford and Manchester United’s proposed 100,000-seater stadium would be bigger. The design includes a 35-metre increase in stadium height, and efforts are underway to preserve the “Cathedral on the Hill” feel.
Newcastle have consulted experts on stadium acoustics and construction firm Laing O’Rourke, with the project expected to cost between £2bn and £3bn. The Magpies recently won the League Cup—ending a 56-year trophy drought—and sit fourth in the Premier League, pushing for Champions League qualification.
