Onana’s goalkeeping woes hit new low in Man Utd’s crushing final defeat

Andre Onana has become the first player to lose three European finals with three different clubs—Ajax, Inter Milan, and Manchester United—after United’s 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Andre Onana set an unfortunate record on Wednesday night in Bilbao, as Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final marked his third defeat in a European final with three different clubs.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper was on the losing side with Ajax in the 2017 Europa League final against United, fell short again with Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final against Manchester City, and now has suffered another heartbreaking loss with the Red Devils to Spurs. The latest defeat concludes what has been a disappointing season for both Onana and United.

Despite his struggles on the European stage, Onana has enjoyed domestic success throughout his career. He’s won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax, lifted the Coppa Italia with Inter Milan, and recently secured the FA Cup with Manchester United. However, continental glory continues to elude him.

As the season winds down, Onana will be hoping United can end on a slightly brighter note when they host Champions League-chasing Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday.
