Mark Hughes is preparing to stay with Carlisle United despite their relegation to the National League. The Manchester United legend, who has managed 569 Premier League games and previously led Wales, was unable to save the Cumbrians after joining in February.

Nevertheless, Hughes, 61, has expressed no ego about managing in the fifth tier, stating his love for the game remains strong. Under his leadership, Carlisle won five and drew five of 16 games but still fell short. Hughes signed a rolling contract three months ago, and discussions about his future have been positive.

The club’s American owners, Tom and Patty Piatak, who bought Carlisle 17 months ago, have also expressed faith in Hughes, praising his efforts to reconnect the team and fans. With around 18 players under contract, Hughes believes the club’s core is strong enough to fight back. Despite recent struggles, planning for next season is already underway, and Hughes appears committed to helping Carlisle return to the Football League.
