After City’s 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday, Kevin De Bruyne, 33, discussed the behind-the-scenes events that led to his decision to announce his departure from the Etihad earlier in April. While his Premier League performances this season haven’t been at their peak, De Bruyne is confident in his abilities and isn’t happy with the club’s choice to part ways once his current contract expires.

De Bruyne admitted to feeling “a little bit of shock” upon hearing that no contract extension would be offered. He explained, “I didn’t receive any offer from them all year, and the club made a decision. Of course, I was surprised, but I have to accept it. Honestly, I still believe I can perform at this level, as I’ve shown, but I understand that clubs must make their decisions. It was just half a week until I had to make the announcement, and it wasn’t easy. My family wasn’t home—they were on holiday—so it felt a bit strange, but it is what it is. I told (sporting director Txiki Begiristain and CEO Ferran Soriano) that I still feel like I have a lot to offer. I know I’m not 25 anymore, but I still believe I can do my job.”

Though De Bruyne has struggled with consistency and injuries in recent seasons, he still possesses the quality and physicality to influence high-level matches, as he demonstrated in his excellent performance against Crystal Palace earlier this month. Once his contract expires, several clubs will likely be interested in signing him.

At 33, the Belgian playmaker isn’t ready to retire yet, but only a few clubs could afford his hefty wages at City. In the same interview, De Bruyne mentioned, “I’m open to anything because I have to consider the bigger picture. I’m looking at sporting reasons, family, and everything else together.” Before any transfer decisions are made, he’s focused on helping City secure their Champions League qualification.
