Chelsea staged a comeback from two goals down to earn a draw against relegation-threatened Ipswich at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but head coach Enzo Maresca hinted that the atmosphere in the stadium was lacking and suggested his side needed greater support to secure all three points.
Reflecting on the game, Maresca said:
“We lost some confidence after conceding, likely due to the atmosphere. That’s when you need to stay committed to your plan and keep doing the right things. We usually build from the back with short goal kicks, but on the second goal, we went long—again, influenced by the environment—and it cost us. You have to stay strong and stick to your style.”
“As I’ve said before, we’re a better team when the fans are behind us. It’s up to them how they show support, but today, going 0-1 and 0-2 down, their reaction was expected. Still, in tough moments like these, it’s exactly when we need their backing the most.”
Despite reducing the gap to third-placed Nottingham Forest to just three points, Chelsea were overtaken by Newcastle United and Manchester City in the standings, while Aston Villa drew level with them in sixth. Maresca’s post-match remarks have raised concerns that all may not be well behind the scenes as the Blues battle for a Champions League spot.
Chelsea now turn their attention to the Europa Conference League, where they’ll host Legia Warsaw on Thursday, holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Poland.
