Former Barcelona and France defender Jeremy Mathieu has embarked on a surprising new chapter post-retirement—working at a sports shop. Now 41, Mathieu hung up his boots in 2020 after a knee injury ended his three-year stint with Sporting Lisbon.
He was recently spotted working as a department manager at an Intersport store in Cabries, France, located between Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. A photo of him with fans in the shop, wearing an Intersport vest, quickly went viral online. Mathieu, who began his professional career at Sochaux, also played for Toulouse and Valencia before joining Barcelona in 2014.
During his time with the Catalan giants, he made 94 appearances, scored four goals, and won multiple trophies—including two LaLiga titles, the Champions League, and the Club World Cup. Notably, he scored in a 2015 El Clasico victory over Real Madrid. While working in retail, Mathieu is also pursuing his coaching qualifications, potentially eyeing a return to the sport in a new capacity.
