Franck Ribery has opened up about the most terrifying period of his career, fearing he might lose his leg due to a severe infection. The French legend, who ended his career at Salernitana in 2022, underwent routine knee surgery to insert a metal plate.
However, complications arose when his knee lost all cartilage, and a subsequent infection threatened his limb. Five months after the initial operation, Ribery had the plate removed but contracted Staphylococcus Aureus, leaving him with holes in his leg. The former Bayern Munich star spent 12 days in an Austrian hospital, fearing the worst. “I was really scared. They could have cut off my leg,” he admitted.
Thankfully, Ribery recovered but was forced to retire at 39. The winger won nine Bundesliga titles and the Champions League with Bayern Munich, earning 81 caps for France. His career ended with an impressive 176 goals and 211 assists in 784 games.
