Reece James made his last appearance for England in March 2023 against Italy before coming off the bench against Albania on Friday. He then started in Monday’s 3-0 victory over Latvia, marking the occasion with a stunning first-half free-kick. Reflecting on his goal, James admitted he was surprised to see his effort find the net.

The right-back has endured a difficult period with recurring injuries since his previous involvement with the national team. However, he has now regained his spot under former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel. If he can maintain his fitness, his goal on Monday could help solidify his place in the squad moving forward.

Speaking to ITV Sport, James expressed his delight at returning to international duty: “It’s been a long time, and the past two years have been frustrating. I’m thrilled to be back with the national team. When I saw the wall, I believed I could curl it around, but I was a bit surprised it went in. Thomas Tuchel’s ideas are clear, and our focus is set from this week all the way to the World Cup.”

James will now rejoin Chelsea, who face Tottenham at Stamford Bridge next Thursday in the Premier League. Meanwhile, England will take on Andorra in a World Cup qualifier in June before hosting Senegal for a friendly at the City Ground.
