Chelsea pushed to finance Jadon Sancho’s move back to Man Utd during goal crisis

Jadon Sancho, currently on loan at Chelsea after a fallout with Erik ten Hag, could stay permanently if Chelsea finishes 14th or higher in the Premier League, triggering a £22-25 million purchase clause.

Jadon Sancho, who joined Chelsea on loan this season after a falling out with former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, could remain at Stamford Bridge permanently under specific conditions. The loan deal includes a mandatory purchase clause if Chelsea finishes 14th or higher in the Premier League, with the transfer fee set between £22-25 million depending on their final position.

With Enzo Maresca’s side currently sitting comfortably in fourth place—far ahead of United in 13th—it seems increasingly likely that Chelsea will trigger the permanent move. However, if the Blues choose not to finalize the transfer, Sancho would return to Old Trafford, though this decision would come with a financial penalty for Chelsea.

Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender William Gallas has expressed skepticism about Sancho’s ability to deliver at the highest level. He argues that the winger has not yet rediscovered the form he displayed at Borussia Dortmund and believes Chelsea would be better off letting him go.

Speaking to Spin Genie, Gallas stated: “Based on what I’ve seen from Jadon Sancho, I would rather pay the fee to send him back to Manchester United than keep him permanently. Players with his talent should be performing consistently, yet he hasn’t been able to replicate his Dortmund displays.”

He continued: “At United, he had issues with Erik ten Hag. When he moved to Chelsea, we expected him to show the same level he had at Dortmund, and while he started well, consistency has been a major problem. Today’s players struggle to maintain high performance levels for some reason. Sancho has the ability, but he isn’t doing enough. If he ends up back at United, it’s a sign that he couldn’t progress to the next level—maybe the Premier League is just too demanding for him.”

Gallas suggests that Sancho’s struggles could stem from the physical and mental intensity of English football. The Premier League is widely regarded as one of the most physically demanding competitions, and Gallas believes Sancho has yet to fully adapt.

“In the Premier League, consistency is key. It’s an intense league, and maintaining peak performance every weekend—or even twice a week—is incredibly tough,” he explained. “You need to be physically strong, recover well, and manage your rest effectively. Even if you played well three days ago, you have to be ready to go again. Other leagues like Ligue 1, Bundesliga, and Serie A don’t operate at the same intensity.”

Sancho remains under contract with United until 2026, but his reported £250,000-a-week wages present a significant financial challenge. Chelsea currently covers £100,000 of his salary while United pays the rest. If Chelsea decides against a permanent deal, United will face the difficult task of finding another club willing to take on the out-of-favor winger.
