Argentina is captivated by the five-month trial of seven medical personnel accused of homicide with possible intent in connection with the death of football legend Diego Maradona. The former football star, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup, died at age 60 from heart disease on November 25, 2020, just weeks after brain surgery.

Prosecutors argue that the medical team was criminally negligent, providing reckless home care that contributed to Maradona’s death. Disturbing details have emerged, including allegations of him being washed down with a hosepipe and given sleeping pills mixed with alcohol.

Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari described Maradona’s residence as a “house of horror” where his care was “reckless, deficient, and without any control.” Messages from his neurologist, Leopoldo Luque, reveal a lack of concern, with him referring to Maradona’s death as inevitable. Outside the court, fans demanded justice for the national hero, who battled addiction and health issues throughout his life.
