Premier League owner Tony Bloom faced another costly loss at Cheltenham after betting £50,000 on his own horse, Energumene, in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. Despite leading for most of the race, Energumene finished last among those who completed the race, while Marine Nationale claimed victory.

Heavy favorite Jonbon also failed to win after nearly falling midway through the race. Bloom’s unfortunate run at Cheltenham continues, as he reportedly lost £100,000 last year backing his mare Atlantique, which finished third in the Novices’ Hurdle. Despite his passion for horse racing and ownership of several horses, success has been elusive.

This year’s festival saw more high-profile losses, including Ballyburn’s defeat in the Brown Advisory Novices Chase, despite being favored to win. Boxer Derek Chisora even urged fans to “bet the house” on Ballyburn before the unexpected outcome.
