Barcelona reportedly lost millions due to a contract oversight in Nico Gonzalez’s £50 million transfer from Porto to Manchester City. The 23-year-old midfielder, who emerged from La Masia, was sold to Porto for £7 million in 2023 as Barcelona aimed to ease financial struggles.
The club initially included a 40% sell-on clause but later sold half of it to Porto for just £2.5 million. As a result, instead of receiving £20 million from Gonzalez’s City move, Barcelona only earned £10 million, totaling £12.5 million when including Porto’s clause payment—£7.5 million less than expected.
Barcelona also had a £25 million buy-back option, which, had they exercised it, could have allowed them to sell Gonzalez to City for £50 million and secure a £25 million profit. However, Porto’s earlier clause purchase rendered this option void. Meanwhile, Gonzalez expressed excitement about joining City, calling it the perfect opportunity to develop under Pep Guardiola and play alongside world-class teammates.
