Arsenal endured a quiet January transfer window, failing to secure any new signings despite an urgent need for attacking reinforcements following injuries to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. Manager Mikel Arteta had expressed his desire to bring in a forward, but the club’s hierarchy did not act on his requests.

Reports suggest the Gunners made a £40 million ($49.9m) bid for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, but the offer was rejected, especially after Villa sold Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr in a high-profile move. Additionally, Arsenal reportedly withdrew from the pursuit of Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, who instead joined their rivals Tottenham on loan with an option to buy.

Addressing the media, Arteta acknowledged the club’s intent to strengthen the squad but admitted disappointment over the lack of additions. He stated, “We had a clear goal during the window to explore opportunities to enhance the team with impactful players. Unfortunately, we couldn’t accomplish that, which is frustrating. However, we remain disciplined in our approach and only want to bring in the right profiles.”

He also emphasized the importance of adapting to the current situation, saying, “This isn’t a gamble—it’s just reality. We must acknowledge the circumstances and evolve by relying more on our academy talents and maximizing contributions from our existing squad.”

Arteta further stressed the need for flexibility in attack, urging his available players to stay fit and deliver consistent performances.

Arsenal, currently trailing by two goals in their Carabao Cup semi-final tie, will look to overturn the deficit with a commanding performance against Newcastle on Wednesday as they push for a spot in the final.
