Carlisle United are reportedly considering Steven Gerrard as their next manager after sacking Mike Williamson. The former Liverpool captain recently left his role at Al-Ettifaq after 18 months in charge and could now make a surprising switch from the Middle East to League Two.

Carlisle’s American owners are said to be eyeing Gerrard despite bookmakers favoring ex-Bolton boss Ian Evatt for the job. Williamson was dismissed after recording just five wins in 25 matches, leaving Carlisle five points adrift at the bottom of the table. The club has brought in 12 new players during the winter transfer window in a desperate bid to avoid relegation.

Gerrard, who won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers in 2021, had a short stint at Aston Villa before managing Al-Ettifaq. Despite signing high-profile players like Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum, he left the Saudi club by mutual consent. If appointed, Gerrard faces the tough challenge of saving Carlisle from dropping out of the English Football League.
