Former Tottenham goalkeeper Pau Lopez has faced an unexpected setback after his transfer to RC Lens collapsed, just a day after it was officially announced. Lopez, 30, spent the 2016-17 season at Tottenham as a third-choice goalkeeper behind Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.

Following stints at Real Betis, Roma, and Marseille, he joined Girona on loan last summer but made only one appearance this season. RC Lens had arranged to sign Lopez as their new No. 1, replacing Brice Samba, who moved to Rennes. Lopez passed his medical, signed a contract, and was set to train with Lens.

However, Girona intervened, refusing to terminate his loan until January 29. RC Lens called this condition “unacceptable” and canceled the transfer. Marseille, Lopez’s parent club, confirmed they had submitted the termination draft to Girona, but negotiations stalled due to Girona’s late demands. This unforeseen twist leaves Lopez’s future uncertain.
