In October, a French court ordered PSG to pay their former star, Kylian Mbappé, €55 million (£46m/$60m) in unpaid wages following his departure to Real Madrid. The legal dispute between the French club and the 25-year-old continues, and during this battle, the Union Nationale des Footballeurs Professionnels (UNFP) has shown strong support for the French international. The players’ union condemned PSG’s actions, stating they would “never accept” the club’s stance and accusing PSG of undermining key values in French football.
Part of the statement reads: “We could mock signed contracts and regulations, but that would open Pandora’s box, ultimately attacking the Professional Football Charter. In other words, the Collective Bargaining Agreement, which some managers find restrictive because it hinders their covert plans to undermine social protections, reshape employment contracts, and change the working conditions of professional footballers in France. The UNFP and its members will never accept this. Never!”
The union also expressed concern that the Charter is not the only thing at risk, urging the LFP to enforce its own rules and commission decisions. Should the need arise, the UNFP stated they would support the LFP in resisting clubs’ attempts to reduce the League’s regulatory power, which they claim would undermine fairness and integrity in competitions, even challenging the fundamental principles of the European sports model that these clubs themselves endorse.
Despite his remarkable achievements with PSG, including 256 goals and numerous trophies, the legal battle threatens to sour their once-positive relationship. While this conflict unfolds, Mbappé will focus on Real Madrid’s upcoming La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.
